thyme
{up close & personal with my thyme!}

I have recently discovered the macro setting on my camera…and I am head over heels in love with it!

At the end of April, one corner of my backyard erupts into a lava-flow of tiny, delicate, pink flowers.  And this time, I actually took the time to stop and “smell the roses” so to speak!

In fact, that discovery of my macro setting has opened up a whole new world ready to be photographed right in my own backyard!

I typically don’t post on the weekends, but I am having way too much fun with these August photos!  Have you discovered the macro setting on your camera?!  So fun!!

We planted our garden about 10 days ago.  B. and E. had fun playing in the dirt.  D., well, he lost interest after the first couple plants…not what I expected, considering he was the most excited about making a garden this year!  Six year olds – go figure!

We have three of these little circles, each with similar veggies growing. One for each of the kiddos.

They are probably a bit undersized for the plants, but we’ll just see how it all grows this year. So far there have been two hail storms that threatened to rip these little guys to shreds…thankfully, the hail stayed about pea-sized and little damage was done!

I am looking forward to watching these gardens grow, watching my kiddos learn to take care of them, and learning about growing my family’s food – something I’ve always been curious about, but never tried.

These three little gardens are going to be one of our summertime adventures this year! Here’s to long sunshine-y days!

The morning was filled with garden stores and lunch away from home – me, D., B. and E. Usually it’s a bit stressful, considering I am grossly outnumbered (not to mention they are 6, 4 and 1!)! But today, it wasn’t too bad. Dare I say, it was even enjoyable! (who is this person, and where did she come from?! – I hope she’s planning to stay awhile!)

Our seedlings didn’t fare too well when we transplanted them. Our backyard gets hot-hot, and well, I should’ve used some of our beach umbrellas for a little direct-sun protection for the first few days. Oh well! I’m learning the hard way! So instead of looking at a sad and empty garden bed all summer long, we decided to purchase some nursery grown veggies.

Our evening will be filled with dirty little fingers and toes, planting our new little friends. And I will likely dig out the beach umbrellas for added protection from the sun in the days to come! I am determined to grow this garden!

I am so honored to be the winner of this weekend’s Trifecta challenge…what a happy surprise for Monday!
Thanks to all those who have stopped by to read and to those who have taken the time to comment too! I love it! XOXO

Our garden seedlings have been making lots of progress…except for the carrots (top left container).  But, the seed packet does say that carrots do take longer to germinate, so I just need some patience I guess!  The kids and I planted these on May 1st and noticed the first little leaves poking through the soil on May 8th (only 1 week!).  This is so exciting!!

As luck would have it, my dining room window faces south – so now that’s our officially “baby plant zone”.  The big kids squeal with delight every morning as they check up on our new little lives’ that we are nurturing.

Now that Mother’s Day has come and gone, our chance for frost is pretty minimal…so this week I need to get busy actually building the garden for these little guys!

:::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::

What about you…do you start your seedlings indoors, or outdoors?  Or, do you just go and buy the plants that the garden center has started already?  Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated…afterall, this is my first vegetable garden!

Happy Growing!

When it comes to writing, I take myself way too seriously.

Maybe you’re that same kind of writer?

The one who wants to be relevant, sound smart, deep, even waxing philosophical perhaps?

Yup, that’s me.

I am inside my head way too much.
I am a thinker.
Is that just par for the course when you’re navigating life using a writer’s brain…a writer’s soul?

But sometimes I just think way too much. I just need to write it out, whatever it may be.

And what do  I do in the many minutes, hours, days and weeks that I spend not writing?

Well, I spend a lot of time doing.

Doing mom things, doing wife things, doing other creative things besides writing.

I love creating so much that I considered starting up one of those artsy-momma type blogs. That’s one of those “someday” things though (like when they invent an extra hour – or five! – for our days). In the meantime, I create for myself and my family through photography, drawing (Sharpies & colored pencils make me giddy!), sewing, cooking and gardening. (Yes! I have way too many hobbies, but how can you pick just one?!)  Is there such a thing as a compulsive creator?

Anyways…I’m sure I’ll share some of those creations here from time to time.

:::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::     :::

So what about you? What do you do in your “non-writing” time? Do you have any creative hobbies? Do those creative hobbies inspire your writing life?

Our Spring has felt more like Summer this year.

Except, in my neck of the woods (near Boulder, CO) even with days creeping up to 80 degrees, there is still that slight possibility of frost reaching it’s icy tentacles around the budding trees and plants every night.  But, I’m throwing caution to the wind this year…I have a serious case of Spring Fever!

The kids and I ventured out to the garden center yesterday afternoon.  Surrounding myself with the rows of plants and trees always fills me with a peaceful buzz of possibility.

There is just so much life.

So much positive energy.

My inner voice has been nagging me a lot over the past few weeks.

You need to plant a garden this summer“, it urges me.

And these days, I’m learning that my inner voice is pretty much a genius.

This garden is important.

image-3
The “why” isn’t very clear to me right now.  It’s not like I need something else to take care of (3 kids, a husband, dog, house – that should be enough for anyone!).

image-5
But – I will listen to and trust this quiet, still voice inside of me.

All I need to remember is that this garden is important, the “why” will come soon enough.
